At No Way Out, Matt Hardy chose Tatanka to be his partner against MNM, and together they defeated the WWE Tag Team Champions in a non-title match. They got a rematch the next week on Friday Night SmackDown, but were unable to dethrone MNM with the gold on the line. Despite the setback, Tatanka continued to be very successful, compiling quite a winning streak on Velocity and also picking up several wins in both singles and tag team matches on Friday Night SmackDown as well. He made it to the final four of a Last Chance Battle Royal for a spot in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 22, but was eliminated by Johnny Nitro.

Following WrestleMania, however, Tatanka embarked on perhaps his most difficult yet enriching journey yet: becoming a member of the Lakota tribe.
